Looking into the innovators of bebop drumming! Some of the early percussionists to introduce the bebop style of drumming in the early 1940's were Max Roach, Kenny Clarke, and Art Blakey.

Bebop was a style of drumming meant to be listened to (rather than danced to); it was more of an art form. It used faster tempos and introduced new forms of chromaticisms and dissonance into jazz - which is just a fancy way of saying that jazz was moving away from what was popular to something more challenging.

Initially, bebop was met with some hostility, but by the 1950's bebop had been accepted into the vocabulary of jazz...

...with great pleasure!
